نية / Niy-yah
Niyyah is the Islamic concept of intention made in the heart before performing an act of worship or any action for the sake of Allah.
The Niyyah meaning in Islam refers to a person’s sincere intention and purpose behind their actions. In Islam, intentions are very important because actions are judged according to the intention behind them.
In Islam, Niyyah plays a central role in worship and daily life. Muslims make Niyyah before acts such as Salah (prayer), fasting, Hajj, charity, and other forms of worship to ensure the action is performed sincerely for Allah.
Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) taught that “Actions are judged by intentions,” highlighting the importance of sincerity in Islam. A good action done with sincere Niyyah can bring reward, while actions performed for showing off or personal praise lose spiritual value.
Niyyah does not always need to be spoken aloud because its true place is in the heart. Muslims are encouraged to purify their intentions and perform both religious and everyday actions with honesty, sincerity, and devotion to Allah.
The concept of Niyyah also reminds believers that ordinary activities, such as work, helping others, or caring for family, can become acts of worship when done with good intentions according to Islamic values.
