Mutashabihat are Quranic verses whose meanings may be symbolic, allegorical, or not immediately clear to human understanding.
What Are Mutashabihat?
The Mutashabihat meaning in Islam refers to verses of the Quran that contain deeper meanings or interpretations that may not be fully understood without scholarly explanation. The word “Mutashabihat” comes from an Arabic root meaning “similar” or “ambiguous.”
What Do Mutashabihat Mean in Islam?
In Islam, the Quran contains both clear verses (Muhkamat) and Mutashabihat verses. Muhkamat verses are direct and clear in meaning, while Mutashabihat verses may contain symbolic language, metaphors, or meanings known fully only to Allah.
These verses often relate to unseen matters such as the nature of Allah’s attributes, events of the Hereafter, or deeper spiritual concepts. Islamic scholars study Mutashabihat carefully using the Quran, Hadith, Arabic language, and classical Tafsir to understand their meanings correctly.
The Quran mentions Mutashabihat in Surah Aal-e-Imran, teaching believers to approach such verses with humility, faith, and sincerity rather than confusion or misuse. Muslims believe that all Quranic verses are part of Allah’s wisdom and guidance.
Understanding Mutashabihat encourages reflection, learning, and trust in Allah’s knowledge. It also highlights the depth and richness of the Quran as a source of guidance for humanity.
