What Is a Surah?

The Surah meaning in Islam refers to a chapter of the Quran. The Quran contains 114 Surahs of different lengths, each revealed by Allah to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

What Does Surah Mean in Islam?

In Islam, Surahs are an essential part of the Quran and contain guidance, teachings, stories of prophets, laws, prayers, and reminders for humanity. Each Surah has a unique name and message, helping Muslims understand faith, worship, morality, and daily life according to Islamic teachings.

Some Surahs are short and commonly recited in daily Salah, such as Surah Al-Ikhlas, Surah Al-Falaq, and Surah An-Nas, while others are longer and discuss detailed teachings and historical events. The longest Surah in the Quran is Surah Al-Baqarah.

Surahs are divided into verses called Ayahs and are categorized as either Makki or Madani depending on whether they were revealed before or after the Hijrah of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) to Madinah.
