sawm

صوم / Sawm

Sawm is the Islamic act of fasting, where Muslims abstain from food, drink, and other physical needs from dawn until sunset for the sake of Allah.

What Is Sawm?

The Sawm meaning in Islam refers to fasting as an act of worship and obedience to Allah. Sawm is one of the Five Pillars of Islam and is especially observed during the holy month of Ramadan.

What Does Sawm Mean in Islam?

In Islam, Sawm teaches self-discipline, patience, gratitude, and spiritual growth. Muslims fast from Fajr (dawn) until Maghrib (sunset), avoiding food, drink, and sinful behavior while focusing on worship and remembrance of Allah.

Fasting during Ramadan is obligatory for healthy adult Muslims, although exemptions exist for those who are ill, traveling, elderly, pregnant, or unable to fast. Muslims begin the fast with a pre-dawn meal called Suhoor and break it at sunset with Iftar.

Sawm is not only about avoiding food and drink but also about controlling thoughts, speech, and actions. Muslims use fasting to strengthen faith, increase Quran recitation, make dua, and perform acts of charity and kindness.

Islam teaches that fasting brings believers closer to Allah and helps them develop empathy for people facing hunger and hardship. Sawm is considered a deeply rewarding act of worship that purifies the heart and strengthens spiritual awareness.
