Tanween

تنوين / Tan-ween

Tanween is a grammatical and Tajweed feature in Arabic that adds an “n” sound at the end of certain words.

What Is Tanween?

The Tanween meaning in Arabic refers to double vowel marks placed at the end of a noun to produce a light “n” sound in pronunciation. Tanween is commonly used in Quran recitation and Arabic grammar.

What Does Tanween Mean in Islam?

In Islam, Tanween is important because it affects the correct pronunciation and recitation of the Quran. Muslims studying Tajweed and Quran reading learn Tanween rules to recite verses accurately and preserve their proper meaning.

There are three types of Tanween in Arabic:

Fathatain (ً) – produces an “an” sound

Kasratain (ٍ) – produces an “in” sound

Dammatain (ٌ) – produces an “un” sound

Tanween often interacts with Tajweed rules such as Izhar, Idgham, Ikhfa, and Iqlab depending on the letters that follow it in Quranic recitation. Correct pronunciation of Tanween helps maintain fluency, rhythm, and clarity while reading the Quran.

Students learning Arabic and Tajweed study Tanween carefully because it is one of the foundational elements of Quran recitation and pronunciation. It plays an important role in preserving the beauty and authenticity of the Quran as taught by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
