Surah 53 · 62 Ayahs
What Is Surah An-Najm?
Surah An-Najm is Surah 53 of the Quran. It contains 62 ayahs and was revealed in Makkah.
- 1
Ayah 1
وَٱلنَّجْمِ إِذَا هَوَىٰ
Meaning
By the star when it goes down to set,
- 2
Ayah 2
مَا ضَلَّ صَاحِبُكُمْ وَمَا غَوَىٰ
Meaning
your fellow (the Holy Prophet) has neither missed the way, nor did he deviate.
- 3
Ayah 3
وَمَا يَنطِقُ عَنِ ٱلْهَوَىٰٓ
Meaning
He does not speak out of (his own) desire.
- 4
Ayah 4
إِنْ هُوَ إِلَّا وَحْىٌ يُوحَىٰ
Meaning
It is but revelation revealed (to him).
- 5
Ayah 5
عَلَّمَهُۥ شَدِيدُ ٱلْقُوَىٰ
Meaning
It is taught to him by one (angel) of strong faculties,
- 6
Ayah 6
ذُو مِرَّةٍ فَٱسْتَوَىٰ
Meaning
the one of vigour. So he stood poised,
- 7
Ayah 7
وَهُوَ بِٱلْأُفُقِ ٱلْأَعْلَىٰ
Meaning
while he was on the upper horizon.
- 8
Ayah 8
ثُمَّ دَنَا فَتَدَلَّىٰ
Meaning
Then he drew near, and came down,
- 9
Ayah 9
فَكَانَ قَابَ قَوْسَيْنِ أَوْ أَدْنَىٰ
Meaning
so as he was at a distance like that of two bows (joined together), rather even nearer.
- 10
Ayah 10
فَأَوْحَىٰٓ إِلَىٰ عَبْدِهِۦ مَآ أَوْحَىٰ
Meaning
Thus He (Allah) revealed to His slave what He revealed.
- 11
Ayah 11
مَا كَذَبَ ٱلْفُؤَادُ مَا رَأَىٰٓ
Meaning
The heart did not err in what he saw.
- 12
Ayah 12
أَفَتُمَـٰرُونَهُۥ عَلَىٰ مَا يَرَىٰ
Meaning
Do you quarrel with him in what he sees?
- 13
Ayah 13
وَلَقَدْ رَءَاهُ نَزْلَةً أُخْرَىٰ
Meaning
Indeed he saw him another time
- 14
Ayah 14
عِندَ سِدْرَةِ ٱلْمُنتَهَىٰ
Meaning
by Sidrat-ul-Muntahā (the lote-tree in the upper realm),
- 15
Ayah 15
عِندَهَا جَنَّةُ ٱلْمَأْوَىٰٓ
Meaning
near which there is Jannat-ul-Ma’wā (the Paradise of Abode),
- 16
Ayah 16
إِذْ يَغْشَى ٱلسِّدْرَةَ مَا يَغْشَىٰ
Meaning
when the lote-tree was covered by that which covered it.
- 17
Ayah 17
مَا زَاغَ ٱلْبَصَرُ وَمَا طَغَىٰ
Meaning
The eye neither went wrong, nor did exceed the limit.
- 18
Ayah 18
لَقَدْ رَأَىٰ مِنْ ءَايَـٰتِ رَبِّهِ ٱلْكُبْرَىٰٓ
Meaning
He has indeed seen a part of the biggest signs of your Lord.
- 19
Ayah 19
أَفَرَءَيْتُمُ ٱللَّـٰتَ وَٱلْعُزَّىٰ
Meaning
Have you ever considered about the (idols of) Lāt and ‘Uzzā,
- 20
Ayah 20
وَمَنَوٰةَ ٱلثَّالِثَةَ ٱلْأُخْرَىٰٓ
Meaning
and about the other, the third (idol), namely, Manāt,?
- 21
Ayah 21
أَلَكُمُ ٱلذَّكَرُ وَلَهُ ٱلْأُنثَىٰ
Meaning
Is it that you have males and He (Allah) has females?
- 22
Ayah 22
تِلْكَ إِذًا قِسْمَةٌ ضِيزَىٰٓ
Meaning
If so, it is a bizarre division.
- 23
Ayah 23
إِنْ هِىَ إِلَّآ أَسْمَآءٌ سَمَّيْتُمُوهَآ أَنتُمْ وَءَابَآؤُكُم مَّآ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ بِهَا مِن سُلْطَـٰنٍ ۚ إِن يَتَّبِعُونَ إِلَّا ٱلظَّنَّ وَمَا تَهْوَى ٱلْأَنفُسُ ۖ وَلَقَدْ جَآءَهُم مِّن رَّبِّهِمُ ٱلْهُدَىٰٓ
Meaning
These are nothing but names you and your fathers have invented; Allah has sent down no authority attached to them. They are following nothing but conjecture and what their own souls desire, while guidance from their Lord has surely reached them.
- 24
Ayah 24
أَمْ لِلْإِنسَـٰنِ مَا تَمَنَّىٰ
Meaning
Is it that man can get whatever he wishes?
- 25
Ayah 25
فَلِلَّهِ ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةُ وَٱلْأُولَىٰ
Meaning
(No,) because to Allah alone belongs the (good of) the Hereafter and the former life (of this world).
- 26
Ayah 26
۞ وَكَم مِّن مَّلَكٍ فِى ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ لَا تُغْنِى شَفَـٰعَتُهُمْ شَيْـًٔا إِلَّا مِنۢ بَعْدِ أَن يَأْذَنَ ٱللَّهُ لِمَن يَشَآءُ وَيَرْضَىٰٓ
Meaning
How many angels there are in the heavens whose intercession cannot benefit (any one) at all, but after Allah allows (it) for whomsoever He wills and pleases.
- 27
Ayah 27
إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ لَيُسَمُّونَ ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةَ تَسْمِيَةَ ٱلْأُنثَىٰ
Meaning
Those who do not believe in the Hereafter call the angels by names of females.
- 28
Ayah 28
وَمَا لَهُم بِهِۦ مِنْ عِلْمٍ ۖ إِن يَتَّبِعُونَ إِلَّا ٱلظَّنَّ ۖ وَإِنَّ ٱلظَّنَّ لَا يُغْنِى مِنَ ٱلْحَقِّ شَيْـًٔا
Meaning
They do not have knowledge about it. They follow nothing but conjecture, and conjecture is of no avail in (the matter of) Truth.
- 29
Ayah 29
فَأَعْرِضْ عَن مَّن تَوَلَّىٰ عَن ذِكْرِنَا وَلَمْ يُرِدْ إِلَّا ٱلْحَيَوٰةَ ٱلدُّنْيَا
Meaning
So, turn away from him who turns away from Our advice, and seeks nothing but (pleasure of) the worldly life.
- 30
Ayah 30
ذَٰلِكَ مَبْلَغُهُم مِّنَ ٱلْعِلْمِ ۚ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَن ضَلَّ عَن سَبِيلِهِۦ وَهُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَنِ ٱهْتَدَىٰ
Meaning
That is the limit of their access to knowledge. Indeed only your Lord knows well about the one who has gone astray from his way, and He knows well about the one who has adopted the right path.
- 31
Ayah 31
وَلِلَّهِ مَا فِى ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَمَا فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ لِيَجْزِىَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَسَـٰٓـُٔوا۟ بِمَا عَمِلُوا۟ وَيَجْزِىَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَحْسَنُوا۟ بِٱلْحُسْنَى
Meaning
To Allah belongs whatever there is in the heavens and whatever there is in the earth, so that He gives punishment to evildoers for what they did, and gives good reward to those who did good
- 32
Ayah 32
ٱلَّذِينَ يَجْتَنِبُونَ كَبَـٰٓئِرَ ٱلْإِثْمِ وَٱلْفَوَٰحِشَ إِلَّا ٱللَّمَمَ ۚ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ وَٰسِعُ ٱلْمَغْفِرَةِ ۚ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِكُمْ إِذْ أَنشَأَكُم مِّنَ ٱلْأَرْضِ وَإِذْ أَنتُمْ أَجِنَّةٌ فِى بُطُونِ أُمَّهَـٰتِكُمْ ۖ فَلَا تُزَكُّوٓا۟ أَنفُسَكُمْ ۖ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَنِ ٱتَّقَىٰٓ
Meaning
-those who abstain from the major sins and from shameful acts, except minor involvements. Indeed your Lord is extensive in forgiveness. He knows you more than anyone else (from a time) when He created you from the earth and when you were embryos in the wombs of your mothers. So, do not claim purity (from faults) for your selves. He knows best who is God-fearing.
- 33
Ayah 33
أَفَرَءَيْتَ ٱلَّذِى تَوَلَّىٰ
Meaning
Did you see the one who turned away,
- 34
Ayah 34
وَأَعْطَىٰ قَلِيلًا وَأَكْدَىٰٓ
Meaning
and gave a little, and stopped?
- 35
Ayah 35
أَعِندَهُۥ عِلْمُ ٱلْغَيْبِ فَهُوَ يَرَىٰٓ
Meaning
Does he have knowledge of the Unseen whereby he sees (what he believes)?
- 36
Ayah 36
أَمْ لَمْ يُنَبَّأْ بِمَا فِى صُحُفِ مُوسَىٰ
Meaning
Has he not been told of what was (revealed) in the scriptures of Mūsā
- 37
Ayah 37
وَإِبْرَٰهِيمَ ٱلَّذِى وَفَّىٰٓ
Meaning
and of Ibrāhīm who fulfilled (his duties)?
- 38
Ayah 38
أَلَّا تَزِرُ وَازِرَةٌ وِزْرَ أُخْرَىٰ
Meaning
(It was) that no bearer of burden shall bear the burden of the other,
- 39
Ayah 39
وَأَن لَّيْسَ لِلْإِنسَـٰنِ إِلَّا مَا سَعَىٰ
Meaning
and that a man shall not deserve but (the reward of) his own effort,
- 40
Ayah 40
وَأَنَّ سَعْيَهُۥ سَوْفَ يُرَىٰ
Meaning
and that his effort will soon be seen,
- 41
Ayah 41
ثُمَّ يُجْزَىٰهُ ٱلْجَزَآءَ ٱلْأَوْفَىٰ
Meaning
then he will be recompensed for it in full,
- 42
Ayah 42
وَأَنَّ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ ٱلْمُنتَهَىٰ
Meaning
and that to your Lord is the end (of every one),
- 43
Ayah 43
وَأَنَّهُۥ هُوَ أَضْحَكَ وَأَبْكَىٰ
Meaning
and that He is the One who makes (one) laugh and makes (him) weep,
- 44
Ayah 44
وَأَنَّهُۥ هُوَ أَمَاتَ وَأَحْيَا
Meaning
and that He is the One who gives death and gives life,
- 45
Ayah 45
وَأَنَّهُۥ خَلَقَ ٱلزَّوْجَيْنِ ٱلذَّكَرَ وَٱلْأُنثَىٰ
Meaning
and that He creates the pairs, male and female,
- 46
Ayah 46
مِن نُّطْفَةٍ إِذَا تُمْنَىٰ
Meaning
from a sperm-drop when it is poured (into a womb),
- 47
Ayah 47
وَأَنَّ عَلَيْهِ ٱلنَّشْأَةَ ٱلْأُخْرَىٰ
Meaning
and that the second creation is undertaken by Him,
- 48
Ayah 48
وَأَنَّهُۥ هُوَ أَغْنَىٰ وَأَقْنَىٰ
Meaning
and that He is the One who gives wealth and preserves (it),
- 49
Ayah 49
وَأَنَّهُۥ هُوَ رَبُّ ٱلشِّعْرَىٰ
Meaning
and that He is the One who is the Lord of Sirius (the star worshipped by pagans),
- 50
Ayah 50
وَأَنَّهُۥٓ أَهْلَكَ عَادًا ٱلْأُولَىٰ
Meaning
and that He has destroyed the earlier ‘Ād,
- 51
Ayah 51
وَثَمُودَا۟ فَمَآ أَبْقَىٰ
Meaning
and Thamūd, so spared none,
- 52
Ayah 52
وَقَوْمَ نُوحٍ مِّن قَبْلُ ۖ إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ هُمْ أَظْلَمَ وَأَطْغَىٰ
Meaning
and (destroyed) the people of NūH even earlier. Surely they were more unjust and more rebellious.
- 53
Ayah 53
وَٱلْمُؤْتَفِكَةَ أَهْوَىٰ
Meaning
And He destroyed the overturned towns (of the people of LūT) also,
- 54
Ayah 54
فَغَشَّىٰهَا مَا غَشَّىٰ
Meaning
so enveloped they were by that which enveloped.
- 55
Ayah 55
فَبِأَىِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكَ تَتَمَارَىٰ
Meaning
Then concerning which of your Lord’s bounties would you remain in doubt?
- 56
Ayah 56
هَـٰذَا نَذِيرٌ مِّنَ ٱلنُّذُرِ ٱلْأُولَىٰٓ
Meaning
This (Prophet) is a warner from the (genus of the) previous warners.
- 57
Ayah 57
أَزِفَتِ ٱلْـَٔازِفَةُ
Meaning
The Imminent (Hour of Judgment) has approached.
- 58
Ayah 58
لَيْسَ لَهَا مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ كَاشِفَةٌ
Meaning
There is no one, beside Allah, to remove it.
- 59
Ayah 59
أَفَمِنْ هَـٰذَا ٱلْحَدِيثِ تَعْجَبُونَ
Meaning
Do you then wonder at this discourse,
- 60
Ayah 60
وَتَضْحَكُونَ وَلَا تَبْكُونَ
Meaning
and laugh (at it), and not weep,
- 61
Ayah 61
وَأَنتُمْ سَـٰمِدُونَ
Meaning
while you are engaged in vain play?
- 62
Ayah 62
فَٱسْجُدُوا۟ لِلَّهِ وَٱعْبُدُوا۟ ۩
Meaning
Now, fall down in prostration and worship (Allah).
